Adelaide Plains Horticulture Blueprint for 2030

The Blueprint provides a vision for the Horticulture Industry on the Adelaide Plains. This document identifies several areas, which if correctly addressed, could lead to increased horticultural output, more employment, and growth of the South Australian economy.

The Adelaide Plains Horticulture industry is concentrated in the area around Virginia and Angle Vale, but is expanding into the area around Two Wells. The majority of horticulture activity includes greenhouse crops and field production of vegetables including potatoes, carrots, brassica and bunch crops as well as almonds, olives and wine grapes. There are many value adding businesses, packing or processing produce from the region and other areas of South Australia.

The Horticultural Industry on the Adelaide Plains has the potential to provide Australian consumers with a secure supply of locally produced fresh product now and into the future. Now is the time to plan for that future.

Blueprint Executive Summary

State and Regional Strategic Infrastructure Plans

The Strategic Infrastructure Plan for South Australia presents the first major step forward in developing a more coordinated long-term approach to infrastructure provision throughout the State. It provides an overarching framework for the planning and delivery of infrastructure by all government and private sector infrastructure providers. Priorities for the period between 2005-06 to 2014-15 are identified for 14 infrastructure sectors.

The Regional Overview of the plan presents infrastructure priorities located throughout the State after the State Government consulted closely with Regional Development Boards and Local Government Associations to present an assessment of infrastructure issues in 7 regions.

To assist local communities to become more involved in deciding on infrastructure priorities for their region and in planning for and managing their infrastructure assets, the Overview provides information for the Barossa, Adelaide Hills and Northern Adelaide Plains, Mid North and Yorke Peninsula, and Murray and Mallee regions.

Yorke Peninsula Regional Land Use Framework

The Yorke Peninsula Regional Land Use Framework (December 2007) was adopted as a volume of the State Government's land use Planning Strategy on 13 December 2007.

The Framework will guide future development across the Yorke Peninsula and Wakefield Plains Region, an area covered by four councils – District Councils of Barunga West, Copper Coast and Yorke Peninsula, and Wakefield Regional Council. In particular, the Framework will guide the updating of the Development Plans covering those four Local Government areas.

Development Plans are the documents which detail local zoning and other land use policies, and which provide the criteria against which all development applications are assessed. Development Plans, and proposed amendments to Development Plans, must be consistent with the Planning Strategy.

The Framework broadly identifies where housing, population and industry growth is best located - and not located - across the Yorke Peninsula region. It identifies the different roles and functions various parts of the region can play, and tackles issues such as the interface between industry, residential areas and valuable environmental assets; the requirements for housing for workers and families, and where these might best be located; and the role and function of townships.

The key resulting themes of the Framework are:

• population and industry growth (with a focus on the Copper Coast and Wakefield Plains)
• sustainable coastal growth
• strengthened inland towns, and
• conservation and nature-based tourism (in particular in western and southern Yorke Peninsula).

Printed and CD-ROM copies are available at no charge from each of the four Councils and Planning SA.
